Brown paper bag

brownpaperbag.jpgI'm all for recycling and using sustainable resources, yadda yadda (well, honestly, isn't everyone just banging on about it all the time?), but this bag may just be my limit.

Hand assembled from part recycled and partly sustainably sourced corrugated cardboard is all well and good, I just don't think it's that attractive. What do you think? It costs £179.95 from Hidden Art and a shoulder bag is also available. [via Switched on Set]

Ollie & Nic Mini Tote Bag

Granted, it's been some time since the Mulberry Mabel was the faint-worthy 'it-bag' on the scene, but my love for it has not yet lessened.

If, like me, it's the colour that did it for you, take a look at Ollie & Nic's Mini Tote Bag - this leather beauty has a similar purple hue that just glows! It also comes with some modern minimalist bag charms. Use it to give an awe-inducing pop of colour to your outfit; it can be yours for £30 at Oli.

The Philosophy of the Handbag According to Hadley Freeman in New Book, The Meaning of Sunglasses

sunglasses.jpgIf a bag was a mere vessel to contain the paraphernalia we seem to require on every journey out of the house, we'd all be walking around carrying plastic Tesco bags. And we all know that even these are inferior to their canvas tote counterparts for the very purpose they were invented!

In her new book, The Meaning of Sunglasses, and a Guide to Almost All Things Fashionable, The Guardian's deputy fashion editor Hadley Freeman explores the fact that the handbag has seriously surpassed mere function and become an object of affection for every fashionista worth her Maldon salt. In the chapter entitled 'Bags: a word or ten thereon', Freeman declares, 'why [women] love bags is pretty much for the same reason they love shoes: they don't make you feel fat, you don't have to try them on [...] and they don't necessarily suit Kate Moss any better than you'.

Hattie Smart's Fashion Dress Gloves

If the biting cold is numbing your fingers, take a look at what a little birdie told me... golfing experts Hattie Smart took a swing in a different direction when, by popular demand, they branched out into designing ladies' fashion gloves ("after all," they say, "you can't stay on the golf course all the time"). And with what results! These absolutely sublime leather dress gloves are silk-lined, with stunning contrasting stitch details and trims; choose from Chocolate, Fuchsia, Baby Blue, Pistachio and Aubergine. I adore their surprising colour combinations - bright pink with lime green stitching? Dusky blue with cranberry detailing? Beautiful.

Each pair costs £49.95, which is par for the course. Of course, if I owned these, I would take extra-special care not to get a hole in one...

Bronze tab purse from Dorothy Perkins

18902043_normal.jpg

There's something about how simple this design is that really appeals to me. I like the basic front clasp, and the shiny material gives it a little edge. You get what you pay for, and at £4 from Dorothy Perkins you're not going to get any embellishments but you do get a nice basic purse to store all your essential in.

Like that? Read this: Cool Kishimoto shopper

Alexander McQueen Swirl pattern clutch

mcqueen-swirlpat-clutch.jpg At first glance, this doesn’t even look like a clutch. But it is. It’s an Alexander McQueen swirl patterned hard acrylic clutch. Mixing muted colours together into a pretty marble effect, the clutch looks almost decadent with a nice vintage feel. It's ideal for nights when you're wearing a stunning but unfussy dress, and want to add a bit of vintage style glamour to your look. The bag features an Alexander McQueen logo plaque at the top, with feet on the base to keep it from scratching every time you put it down. Now if you're not sure if this is something you would buy for yourself, you could hint to your special someone that it’s that must-have accessory that you will own forever. Which is true, it is McQueen we're talking about here.

Mulberry Launch Spring/Summer 08 Collection Featuring New Tote 'Spencer'

mul_spencer%5B1%5D.jpg With Chloe's new Saskia bag, fighting hard for the coveted spot for this year's 'It' Bag, rival shoulder armour champions, Mulberry launch their Spring/Summer 08 collection, featuring their new tote, the 'Spencer' for a place in the running.

This gorgeous tote, available in a dirty, antique gold leather, is both practical and stylish. Complete with internal and external pockets, you won't need to spend hours searching for your Rosebud Salve despite the size of the bag. The combination of short handles and a longer adjustable strap, mean that Notting Hill socialites, and Yummy Mummies alike will be able to dangle this fine specimen of bag from their arms.

Fiorelli Ocean Buckle bag from Dorothy Perkins

fio.jpg

Since my bag got stolen I've been on the look out for a replacement handbag and this one looks lovely. I love the mock croc style print and the gorgeous turquoise blue colour is very this season. The ocean buckle on the bag gives it a contemporary feel and I like how it would easily go from day to night with a little ribbon dash perhaps. It's £50 from Dorothy Perkins.

Kenneth Jay Lane Worth Avenue Retro bag ... grrrowwwlll

kennethworth1.jpgkennethjaguar2.jpg

While I love - no, love is not a strong enough word - while I loave, I luff (yeah, okay, Annie Hall) Kenneth Jay Lane's Ladybug Clutch, I'm just not sold on all his animal head stuff. I know it's really popular, but it just makes me think of Alexis Colby ... oh hang on. That's probably a good thing.

This Worth Avenue Retro bag features a jaguar head (and if you weren't impressed with my impersonation above, this is what a real jaguar sounds like - oh yes, I'm that sad) and it'll set you back $360 from Saks Fifth Avenue.

Subtitled "My Life in Hot Pursuit of the World's Most Coveted Handbag", it's out at the end of April (at which time we may well have a couple of copies to give away ... but you didn't hear it from me!) and chronicles Tonello's success in circumventing the bag's two-year wait list.

Bulga bag more Jabba than 'Lana'?

bulgalana1.jpgjabba.jpg

At first glance I quite liked this 'Lana' bag by Bulga, but then it started to remind me of something. Was it my post-baby belly? Possibly. (Sorry, TMI?) But, no, then it came to me. It's Jabba the Hut. In bag form. And it can be yours for just $502 (retail price $838) from Bluefly . May the force ... oh, never mind.

Juicy Couture All Nighter Bag - how would you build an outfit around it?

It’s funny: my personal style for the longest time has been very feminine, very girly and usually incorporates a lot of pink! Just lately (and this might have something to do with my current style inspiration) I’ve been drawn to a rockier, punkier look and am interested in bringing that side of my personality out a bit more.

Hence why this Juicy Couture All Nighter caught my eye, with its textured leather, chunky chain and slouchy style.

My first instinct would be to buddy it with a pair of black stovepipe jeans, some smoky eyes and a bit of attitude, but on second thought, I think it would look even more fab with a pretty short-sleeve blouse tucked into a conservative high-waisted pencil skirt with gorgeous, tousled curls.

Marc by Marc Jacobs' Softy Poppy tote

softypoppy1.jpgI'm not the biggest Marc Jacobs fan around, in fact I've made it quite clear that I find some of his bags startlingly ugly. But this one? This one makes me go "ohhhhhhhh".

I think the name helps. The colour? Poppy. The bag? Softy. It's not the most exciting bag I've ever seen, but it looks squishy and comfy and big enough for all my crap. It's yummy. And it's $368 from Bloomingdales.

A snood by any other name...

cowl.jpgWhen I started senior school (many years ago), my aunty, who had a knitting machine, made me a snood. Thanks to Nik Kershaw (remember him?), they were all the rage and mine was much-admired. So much, in fact, that my aunty started making more and I sold them at school. For a while, it was quite the cottage industry. Then Nik Kershaw disappeared and the bottom fell out of the snood market. Until now!

Urban Outfitters describe this as a 'day to night convertible cowl', but I know a snood when I see one. (Incidentally, I don't usually get particularly excited about scarves, but Urban Outfitters have got some really gorgeous ones!)

Love affair with L.A.M.B's Glazed Love Asti bag

lambglazedlove2602.jpg

I can’t begin to explain my love affair with (almost) all things L.A.M.B. – but this Glazed Love Asti bag is quite a good place to start!

The gorgeous glazed leather and intricate touches such as the padlock and tassel, chain detail on the handles and quilted panel down the centre are all to-die-for, but what really sells this bag for me is the cute striped lining inside with gold calligraphy ‘L’s scattered all over. The fact that I’d want to open this bag to peer inside as much as I would love to tote it on my arm speaks volumes (possibly about my mental health more than anything else). But seriously, isn’t it beautiful?

If you agree, and are prepared to fork out $725 for the privilege of owning this bag (I’m sending out jealousy vibes – can you feel them?), then it can be found on shopbop.com.

It’s on sale right now at ozdesigner.com for £25 but I’m guessing you better get in quick!

Kenzington Satchel... inspired by?

forever21-45122146-01.jpg Can you guess which designer this Kensington bag from Forever 21 was inspired by? A few clues shall we… well it was seen on the arm of Fergie, Carmen Electra and Nicky Hilton – just to name a few celebs. The designer in question was in rehab last year… and current gossip is that he loves surfing the internet and comment on peoples blogs for his own amusement?

Got the answer? See below to check if you got it right.

As for this bag… it’s made from “stylish synthetic leather” and features two carrying options with the shoulder handles and shoulder strap. Gosh you have to love how the “stylish synthetic leather” just shines. But it is only $29.80 so one can’t really expect quality can we?

Cute moose canvas bag from Abercrombie

abercrombieovernighter2502.jpg

I’m a sucker for anything A&F and so it didn’t take much for this adorable Abercrombie canvas tote bag to catch my eye.

Apart from being rather nice to look at, it’s one of those bags you can envision a million different uses for (which is great for justifying a purchase isn’t it!?)

As an everyday casual bag it’ll fit everything you like to tote about town (and more) or if you’re a yummy mummy, you’ll become that much yummier with this cutie as your nappy bag.

It may not be quite big enough to use for a weekend away but as an overnight bag, it’s plenty big to house your makeup and a (light) change of clothes.

I like the navy blue embroidered moose on the white background, but they also have a white on navy colourway if that's more your, er, bag (sorry). It’s £70 and you can check it out on abercrombie.co.uk.

Leiber Peacock clutch

JU-M31714_042_ex2.jpg I’m still experiencing a bit of Oscar’s fever and what Oscar’s is devoid of a Leiber (formally Judith Leiber) clutch? So I went surfing on the Leiber website and fell for this Leiber Peacock clutch ($5,295). Made with beautifully hand glued multi-colored Austrian crystals and stones, this is one statement clutch that could make or break your Oscars look. Sure it’s not big enough to fit your clutch essentials (phone, money, lip gloss, blotting tissues, powder, etc) but the powder room should be well and truly stocked with everything you could possibly need.

Nili Lotan protest photo silk scarf

photoprintscarf.jpg

As the weather starts warming up you’ll be able to start thinking about the switch from your winter woolly scarves to lighter pashminas and wraps.

This fabulous silk scarf from Nili Lotan sports a black and white protest photo print – a totally eye-catching way of adding some interest to your outfit.

I think this would also make a very sweet headscarf – simply pair with some wide-legged high-waist jeans, a vest top, big sunnies and bare feet (or chunky wooden heels if you must) for a look which is ultra retro.

You better have some savings stashed away however, as it's $150 from shopbop.com.

Mimsy's 'Romance' clutches

Established in 2004, Mimsy may be young but their bags emanate classic modernity. Designer Christyna Theosa uses her graphic art degree to use with beautiful lacy swirls and aesthetic shapes on bags that are, according to their website, 'perfect for every occasion', be it 'formal, smart or casual'.

Check out Mimsy's flash website, if not for any other reason that it's a visual treat. There as some real beauties on there, and I've only picked three clutches from the 'Romance' collection to show you: the beautifully bright yellow 'Tiara' clutch is a great pop of colour, while the more sculptural, envelope style of the floral pale green 'Cloris' clutch oozes elegance. Finally, the 'Fuschia' clutch (centre) really reminds me of the dress and jewels Cameron Diaz wore to the Met's Costume Institute Gala last May (pic after the cut)! Or is it just me...?

Blingin’ bracelets reign supreme on the Oscars red carpet

Bracelets and cuffs seemed to be the accessory du jour (aside from a hard case clutch of course) at the Oscars this year. While a bare décolletage and pared-back makeup was the order of the day for many actresses (think Amy Adams and Cameron Diaz), wristwear on the other hand was big, bold, multi-stacked and sparkly.

(Clockwise from top left) Renee Zellweger, Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Garner and Tilda Swinton were among those who favoured the cuff bracelet look this year.

Goldenbleu's 'Audra' is another failed twofer

goldenbleuaudra.jpgA couple of weeks ago I featured a Marc Jacobs 'Bag on Bag' - a tote with an attached clutch. After carrying the beige and green suede version, Laura Barton wrote in the Guardian: "Even if you found yourself quarantined on some tropical isle with a terrible feverish disease, the delirious hallucinations you experienced could not spawn such a handbag. It is repulsive. And it probably costs a gazillion pounds."

Why am I harping on about the Marc Jacobs bag? Because this Goldenblue 'Audra' is another 'bag on bag' and while it's more successful than the Marc Jacobs (granted, it would be difficult to be less successful), it's still not exactly working for me. The thing is, when the bags are together, one of them is redundant (also a gift to bag thieves), but when they're separated, the snap closures are on show.

I'm disappointed. I really want these bags to work. I'm just not sure why.

Anthropologie now ships internationally!

anthropologie1.jpgHow I love Anthropologie. I've been coveting the store's bags for so long, but until now I had to wait for a New York trip to actually buy anything. Well not anymore!

Anthropologie is now shipping internationally. See the 34 countries they're shipping to so far here. Don't worry if your country isn't listed, they'll be adding more over the coming months. [via Decor8]

Kimono glasses case

kimonocase.jpgAlthough I've worn glasses since I was six years old, I haven't used a glasses case for years. I know I should - because glasses are expensive - but mine are generally to be found on my face, by my bed or next to the shower.

If, unlike me, you're only a part-time four-eyes, this kimono glasses case from The Japanese Shop is a simple and stylish way of keeping your specs safe.

Clutches galore on the Oscars red carpet

Our Shiny Style team in the US have been keeping a beady eye on the best bags the Oscars red carpet had to offer this year - here are a few of their picks:

clutches.jpg

Handbag lovers know that clutches are like the holy grail of purses, so it's no wonder they get so much attention on the red carpet at the Oscars. Except for Amy Adams adorable lilliputian purse, most were very geometric.

Top to bottom, left to right are Cameron Diaz, Marion Cotillard, Amy Adams and Jennifer Garner. Glitzy glamorous embellishments remained popular.

A new IT bag? The Chloe Saskia

it-chloe-saskia.jpg

In the world of the IT bag, Chloe was the Queen of all the designer brands. They hit the spot with the Paddington, then the Silverado, followed by the Edith then the Bay. But after that, the brand seemed to lose their mojo with a season or two with some un-lustworthy bags. Now they may have just hit the mark again with the Chloe Saskia. Featuring two front pockets and a shoulder strap, this bag mixes the vintage/modern mix of Chloe bags of yore, in a new design that is versatile and fits the needs of today's busy woman. Now you can fit as many keys and lip glosses into the front pockets and you won't be digging around the bottom of your bag for hours. If you're as smitten as I am, the tan Chloe Saskia will set you back £889, while the slightly larger glossy red version will cost £1,010.

What do you think? Fab or just another designer bag.

Loop Nature Patch wallet

loopnature.jpg

How pretty is this wallet from Urban Outfitters? Not only is the outside cute, it's satin-lined with 10 cardholders, 2 cash pockets, a zippered pocket and a built-in mirror, so it's practical too. Plus it's got one of those kisslock closures I love so much.

There are another two designs available: one featuring a whale and the other a squirrel. I wonder if $36 each is too much for me to buy all three...

Jewellery for dog lovers

sandycomstock.jpgI must admit that as I first read about Sandy Comstock's line of dog lover gifts featuring "devotional quotes", I probably had a rather facetious expression on my face (perhaps I looked like I'd stepped in something unpleasant...), but then I clicked on the first item - this "Be the Person Your Dog Thinks You Are" bracelet and it made me laugh. It's available for $105 from Raindogs.

Prada Nappa Stripes Multicolour tote ... hideous and hideously expensive

pradanappastripes1.jpgIt must be really easy to be a designer for a premier bag range these days. You know that whatever monstrosity you design, get it on the right celebrity arm and you'll be quids in. That's surely the only explanation for this hideous tote from Prada.

I mean purple, green, yellow and fuschia stripes? For $2,360.00? Yet, at Saks Fifth Avenue, you can order no more than three of these bags every thirty days, "due to popular demand".

Dino Love Wallet from Frozen Peas

dinowallet2_main%20ftozen%20peas.jpg

Hands up who thinks this wallet is adorable? I think the dinosaurs give it that extra special something as it's a step away from the usual naff kittens and puppies we see adorning these sorts of items and the colours are really vibrant. I like how it's handmade as well, as it means everyone is unique. It's $30 from Frozen Peas.

Get blood thirsty with the Cleaver clutch bag

bagcleaverclutch%20rebels.jpg

This is a great bag for those planning on reincarnating their own version of the Texas Chain saw Massacre with its bloody saw like body and funky blood stained edges. It's £24 from Retro Rebels and great just for novelty value. i also like the included red satin style lining for extra oomph.

Crazy ... but in a good way

Handscape_7.jpgThese rings are from a range called Handscape, which will turn "your fingers into a little landscape". I can't tell you how many times I've looked at my fingers and wished I could build a teeny village on them...

Actually, I never have. But now that I've seen these rings by Dutch designer Zelda Beauchampet, I really, really want to. Really. Fortunately, they're just 35 Euro each, so I'll be able to.

Windy Day messenger bag

windyday.jpgMy husband would refuse to buy this Sapphire Squares bag simply because it's described on the Shana Logic website as "The Ultimate Messenger Bag". He has a bee in his bonnet about "ultimate" used to mean "best ever" when its real meaning is "last ever" (hence, "penultimate" meaning "second to last").

But we don't need to concern ourselves with that because a) who cares what my husband thinks? and b) it's a really cute bag!

Kimberley Clutch bag by Tucker Paisley

tuckerpaisley.jpg"Dresses up jeans; glam with a little black dress" claims the Handpicked Collection site from where you can buy these clutches and I think they're probably right.

Of course the site describes itself as "Classic present ideas handpicked by style journalists & trendsetters" which made me throw up in my mouth a little bit, but you can't have everything.

Kitcsh make up bag from Retro Rebel

red%20hot%20bag.jpg

Sadly I've just had me beloved make up bag stolen ( a traumatic event indeed) and as well as having to replace all the makeup goodness it held, I now need a nice way of carrying all my potions n lotions. Considering my cards and cash vanished as well I'm looking for a budget option and I believe I may have found the answer with this gloriously kitschy case, £12.95 from Retro Rebels. I like the bright red colour, it's roomy enough to hold a fr bit, and I loove the pin up style devil girl displayed on it. Something about the pin up era has me breaking out the red lips and angel curls, and something this cute would surely encourage me to spend more time grooming.
