Scarves on the high street: our pick of the best autumn and winter warmers

scarves-top-picks.png

Have you dug out your scarves yet? Mine aren't quite seeing daylight yet, but they have been located and re-positioned at the front of the wardrobe for easy reach once the inevitable cold snap bites. Nobody likes cold air down the neck, so these largely shapeless items will soon become our closest allies.

Another great thing about scarves is how they can add such a huge amount of colour and style to an otherwise standard-issue winter outerwear look, and are a relatively affordable way to alter your look. It's great to have a selection of scarves to vary your style and keep the boredom of winter dressing at bay, and luckily the shops are already full of interesting woolly accessories.

Dream-on Monday: Alexander McQueen Monochrome skull clutch

alexander-mcqueen-skull-clutch-white.jpgIt doesn't seem to matter how many times they re-vamp the iconic Alexander McQueen skull clutch: we still love it in every form it takes. The latest look has wide stitching in the season's monochrome tones, with a white leather body and silver hardware.

This is a slightly more modern look for the clutch, which we have often seen very highly embellished and dripping with grotesque jewels. It gives it a slightly cleaner, lighter look, that could make it suitable for a wider number of occasions. But it hasn't lost an inch of its spooky Gothic glamour. Oh to have one in time for Halloween!

Leighton Meester's Dior Promenade bag and ruffle dress

leighton-meester-dior-handbag.pngLeighton Meester has all the best bags, and she aroused our envy once again at her recent appearance at Dior's spring/summer 2012 show. Dressed in a stunning white ruffled dress, she also flew the flag for the French label by carrying a Dior Promenade bag. She completed the look with a pair of adorable Louis Vuitton pumps. The bag itself is a modern classic, with a chunky silver-toned strap that adds a note of chic to her otherwise girl outfit.

Monochrome chic is a bit of a perennial trend, and it's going to be back in a big way this winter. We think Leighton has pulled it off superbly here, matching the black and white accents in her accessories beautifully. Luckily for those of us without 24/hour stylists on hand it's also the easiest look in the world to perfect: just think in black and white!

Mulberry introduces a 'red onion' Bayswater

mulberry-red-onion-bayswater.jpgWe absolutely love Mulberry's approach to colour, and their wonderfully daring and experimental use of new textures and tones. Red onion calfhair is one of their latest strong winter colours to appear on selected bags, and we are completely in love with what they've made.

The deep purple, slightly hairy surface of the bag is quilted to give it a plush and decadent feel, and Mulberry have also adapted the iconic 'postman's lock' clasp to give it a 3D prism-like shine. Once again, Mulberry's attention to detail results in a beautiful product that is worthy of its lofty price tag.

The roomy bag is lined inside with black suede and has an internal zip pocket, making it a practical as well as an absolutely gorgeous accessory.

Purple Colour Block satchel at River Island

colour-block-satchel.pngThis fabulously eye-catching colour block satchel at River Island is one of the best ways we've seen to capture the look on a budget. It's all ready for autumn, too, with the brighter colours we saw throughout summer giving way to more party-friendly jewel tones and tawny shades.

This is a great choice for daywear, but pop its strap inside and carry it by its handle, and it'll work well for evening events, too.

This silhouette has been one of RI's most popular all year, and we think it still really holds its own.
