The latest comments from Anya Hindmarch on how luxury goods can boost women's confidence are bound to draw scepticism in some quarters. After all, Hindmarch has made a fortune selling expensive bags and accessories, so of course she's going to trot out reasons why we should buy even more.
In a recent interview with the telegraph, she was quoted as saying: "No woman needs another handbag. But fashion gives confidence, it affects mood". She then implied that owning a designer handbag can make many people feel better about themselves.
Some may sneer, but I think this is a truth that anyone who's ever saved for a Very Important Purchase has known all along.
Compared with other fashion purchases I've made in my time, an expensive bag has always felt like money well spent as it's an item that's always with you: it ensures you are well-presented wherever you go, and regardless of what you're wearing underneath.
What do you think: do you feel more confident with a designer handbag on your arm?
