Classic Bags Countdown #6: Lady Dior Cannage tote
In at no.6 is a current obsession of ours here at The Bag Lady, and one that seems to be capturing the imagination of a great many fashion lovers across the globe. It's Lady Dior's Cannage tote, the high-gloss top handler that we've recently seen in the brand's new campaign staring Marian Cotillard. Mimi Spencer said of the Lady Dior tote: "...this brilliantly bourgeois bag is the leather equivalent of a yapping chihuahua", and we have to say we can see where she was coming from...
Handbag History: Like several of the bags in our countdown, the Lady Dior tote is believed to be named after a fashion icon, in this case Princess Diana, formerly "Lady Di", who is said to have fell in love with the bag during a trip to Paris. Some, however, think the similarity of names is pure coincidence, but we like the synchronicity either way. The 'Cannage' part of the name refers to the type of stitching used to give the bag its puckered look.
Launched in the mid-90s, the Lady Dior Cannage Tote has been made in a smaller size and several colours, while more recently a trendy shoulder strap was introduced. But the bags fundamental characteristics have remained largely constant, including the heavy top handles and the metallic pendant letters that make up the 'Dior' logo.
In Our View: In some ways a very '80s' bag, the Lady Dior tote is only just starting to emerge as a true classic. Excessively ladylike and playing on all our weaknesses for shiny things covered in expensive adornments, it's a real treat of a bag that will appeal to anyone with a taste for the finer things in life with an ultra-feminine aesthetic. A boxy bag that's got heaps of retro charm, it's certainly having a fashion moment. But can it last? We believe so!
