Valentino's spring/summer 2011 collection burst on to the runway this week with its usual emphasis on fine leatherwork. Its accessories, which were made up in shades of tan, black and cream, stood out against its prim and proper, ladylike garments, allowing them to take centre stage. Almost all of the bags were decorated with studs, including several that came with pyramid studded hand straps, as shown in the image above left.
A few have questioned the wisdom of the preponderance of studs used in this collection, which sometimes seemed to rely a little too heavily on a feature that is beginning to look a little ubiquitous; particularly since it has displaced Valentino's more recognisable oversized floral motifs from previous collections.
There was also a notable '70s inspiration to several of the pieces, similar to the styling found at Chloe and other labels of late. Flat shoulder bags in golden tan and miniature satchel bags completed the look, and made for some of our favourite pieces in the range.
