Jewellery belonging to late Greek shipping heiress Christina Onassis has been sold at auction for a staggering £15 million.

Put up for sale at London auction house Christie's by her daughter Athina, the jewellery fetched around £7m more than original estimates and was a UK record for this type of auction. The 38 carat pear-shaped diamond necklace by Harry Winston, pictured, was a highlight of the collection and raked in £3.6m alone.

Athina, worth an estimated £1 billion, was left the jewels as part of her inheritance after her mother's passing when she was just three years old. She reportedly told friends she was selling the jewellery as she had no need for it.
