Marc Jacobs' Bag on Bags - better in inspiration than execution?

bagonbag11.jpgbagonbag22.jpg

I like this idea, I really do. Two bags for the price of one. A tote and a clutch. I'm all for it. The idea, I mean. The actually bags. Well...

At first sight of the bag face-on (left), I thought it was a tote printed with a picture of a clutch. And I thought it was extremely ugly. I don't like anything. The mesh, the lace, the leather trim, the colours. All fugly. Then I saw the picture on the right. I like the clutch, but the tote is still dreadful and the two just don't go together. Plus there's the cost - $2100 (from Saks Fifth Avenue). Even for two bags, that's excessive.

It's not just this particular combination. You can see some of the other bags in Jacobs' Spring/Summer 08 collection here and I don't like them either. In fact, they look as if they had a load of hideous totes that they didn't know what to do with and so decided to gussy them up with this novel attached clutch concept. Peculiar.
