Snood: the latest accessory must have?

me.jpg
There's a Dr Seuss book called The Lorax and in this slightly insane surreal book the Lorax creates a made up item called a thneed. It's a three armed jumper than nobody needs because it's useless and absurd but everybody wants one. This is how I feel about the Snood. The word explains the item, it's a combination between a scarf and a hood but is relatively pointless. We can blame Nik Kershaw for it's appearance in the eighties when he regularly used to sport one, even wearing it on an album cover. The whole eighties revival that is dominating the fashion world at the moment has reminded us of this odd item. I can't understand it myself, cannot imagine that it would be flattering on anybody.

On the plus side, if you're having a bad hair day then I suppose it could help, but surely a hat would do that job whilst looking chic? It would also keep your neck warm on chilly days but again, surely thats why the scarf was invented? Obviously it has the qualities of a hood without being attached to a jumper, essentially meaning that you can make any top in to a hoody but I'm sure this would look weird.

Warehouse are selling a charcoal coloured one for £12, it's knitted and the image of it on their website reminds me of an eerie dementor from Harry Potter.

If you're prepared to take on the challenge of a snood then you'd have to wear it slightly pushed down with a chunky knit jumper a la Giles. Or maybe with a sweater dress and leggings as seen at Preen.

"The word is first recorded in Old English from around 725 (OED) and was widely used in the Middle Ages for a variety of cloth or net head coverings, including what we would today call hairbands and cauls, as well as versions similar to a modern net snood. Snoods continued in use in later periods especially for women working or at home. In Scotland and parts of the North of England a ribbon about an inch wide called a snood was worn specifically by unmarried women as an indicator of their status until the late 19th or early 20th century (OED)."

They can be quite pretty, if properly worn.

Well, apparently fashion in England has not caught up with that in NYC because all of this 80's stuff has been here for quite some time. I think it is wonderful, including the snood. If you are young and hip enough you can pull it off and that is just what I have been doing! These were even in the last issue of Lucky magazine.
