Weekly Debate - How Much Would You Spend On A Handbag?

Swagger
I'd love to introduce another weekly feature here at The Bag Lady (as if you don't have them coming out of your ears already!), a weekly feature where we discuss earth-shattering, worldly, important topics such as how much would you spend on a designer handbag? I'd love to know your thoughts on this matter, as I tend to write mostly about designer pieces on this blog, and wonder how many of you can actually afford them. Click on the jump below for my opinion, and to leave your own.

The most I've ever spent on a handbag was £400 (about $800 US), on my beloved Luella Doctor bag. I would definitely spend more than that, and I'm sure I will, however it all depends on the finances, as I'm sure you can imagine! I'd probably pay up to £1000 on a single bag, anything after that is just ridiculous money. Over on our Shiny Fashion Forums we've recently been discussing the merits of designer Vs. high street, and one thing everyone says is that the quality is just so much higher in a designer piece. Designer handbags aren't just for Christmas, they're an investment, and can often be handed down to your grandchildren one day for a genuine 'vintage' present, horror of horrors!

Now over to you, how much would you ever pend on a handbag? What is your max?

For me, also being a student. I have a low budget so I would have to say 1.5k-2.5k is my limit but only because I buy 3 or 4 purses a year and the cheap ones I find for 20 bucks are my regular useage ones.

I've spent about 500.00 max on a bag, I'd probably go to about $700. I b uy a lot of coach, Dooney bourke and tumi. I have a 21 and 23 year old daughters, so they end up with bags thatI'm tired off. They do buy their own bags as well. They have always carried quality bags, because I explained that it was an investment and last much longer At 3 my daughters could identify a fake coach bag. The trick was teaching them not to say out loud, look that lady is carrying an imitation coach bag

I have the Luella "Joni" bag, in black which cost me £495, and i have used it every day and i love it so much i can't stop looking at it when i'm not using it. I will probably not spend this much money on a bag again for quite some years, as i think my "Joni" will last me a long time. So i can justify spending a lot on a bag as cost per wear (or use) will eventually mean my bag has cost about a pound!!!

  • The most I've spent on a bag has been $70 on a messenger from Flicka Bags. It's funky and roomy and I carry it everywhere, even to the office.

Other than that, I do a lot of my bag shopping at Target. They have a lot of nice stuff, particularly the Isaac Mizrahi range.

As a student who pays her way through school, I find spending upwards of $200 on a bag preposterous. I mean, the frivolous side of me adores fashion, but there is also a very practical side of me that points out that there are so many others who could better use the money than me. Even if I had the money for a $2000 bag, I'd probably much rather donate it to a charity, to building a green roof in my community or even just use it to travel.

That said, most designer bags are leather etc. anyway and like someone mentioned vegan bags are much more afforable so it doesn't look like a decision that I will ever have to make.
